Sleep On It
Since you very probably dream at night when your body is resting, it will be no surprise to learn that your brain stays very busy while you sleep. At least that is what we are told by Robert Stickgold and Jeffrey M. Ellenbogen who have done some extensive research on what your brain is busy doing while you sleep.
First of all, it turns out that if you have a problem to solve, “sleeping on it” may be one of the best things you can do.
The latest research suggests that while you are peacefully sleeping your brain is busily processing the day’s information. It works through recently acquired information, stabilizing, copying and filing it so that it will be mentally available the next day or the next time you need it.
Since during sleep, the brain experiences no outside interference, the brain can sift through new information, identify what is worth keeping and selectively maintain that which is important and let the unnecessary details fade away.
It is conceivable that before you drop off to sleep, you could ask your brain to work on a special problem. If all goes well, it would be able and willing to sort and weigh information and either bring the solution to your memory in the morning or perhaps enable you to remember what you learned in the night.
It is easy to believe that you can’t deprive your brain of working time and expect it to do its best work. So it should not be a surprise to learn that your brain doesn’t do it’s best work if you minimize your sleeping time.
And now with all that in mind, sweet dreams.
