basement training

When I asked a dude that trains with Gym Jones what kind of bike trainer he would buy, he told me that the kind is not as important as what I do with it. My brain reasoned with me to not spend too much time at first, but instead work up slowly until I could endure the mental anguish of sitting on the bike in the basement. So, I started with an old Spinner bike and then got a CycleOps trainer and started with short 30 minute rides. Each week, starting back at the first of December, I have added 5-10 minutes to each ride. I am not an expert when it comes to training on the bike, but I do know that there is no substitute for sitting in the saddle. I keep the workout pacing and resistance changing based on ideas from Crossfit Endurance and bike training books, but no matter what kind of training I am doing it always comes down to the conversation that I have inside my head. If the distance, time and effort is not pre-arannged it's pretty hard to talk myself into staying longer on the bike. I have refused to give into these internal conversations.

90 seconds on AirDyne:
It's strange to sit here and think back to how horrible those 90 seconds were. It's only 90 seconds. I made up my mind to go buck wild for 90 seconds and not worry about what would happen to me when I got off. I figured before I got on that I could get 60 calories. I wasn't far off in my calculations. After 30 seconds I had 23 and by the :60 mark I was up to 44. The last thirty seconds blew my quads out for about 5 minutes, but I ended up with 58 total cal in 90 seconds.
