cops

training ride (20 miles):
5 miles easy pace

then

5x 1 mile hill repeats (used the hill running north to south past Zupas past Old Mill)
rest is the time it takes to come down the hill

then

Moved past Porcupine Grill on Wastach Blvd and then rode South to North on Wastach Blvd as a TT. Worked to go at a past that was a fast as possible. My goal was to push everything out of my legs by the time I reached 3900 south. When I got to the Old Mill golf course I ran into about 300 runners who were racing in some sort of half marathon thing. I swung my bike out around a motorcycle cop and about 1/4 later he pulled up along side of me. He seemed to be taunting me, so I excepted his challenge. He started to move a little faster so I picked up my pace and we both kind-of got an idea to see how far we could push this little partnership. By the time I got to the gradual hill that slops up to meet 3300 south I was working a 185 heart rate and I didn't get out of the saddle once or click my gears out of the big ring. He kept looking over at me in an encouraging way until we reached 3900. He yelled, "Nice pace. Good luck," and sped off. It really was an amazing experience, and taught me that having a motorized vehicle set a pace for you is not a bad way to train a TT. Thanks cop.

Each 1 mile hill repeat took 4:50 to complete (up and back). It was on the hill right next to Zupas and Market Street Grill that connects with the street that runs up into Big Cottonwood Canyon. My goal was to beat my time to the top each round, stay in my saddle the whole time, and not come out of my big ring...mission accomplished. It was a nice pre-curser to my encounter with the cop up on Wasatch Blvd.
